Dear President Bruininks,

I am writing to you today as the Minnesota Legislature enters into a special session that will provide flood relief to Southeastern Minnesota. I am honored to be in a position to help those who have been so adversely affected. I believe that you, too, have the opportunity to help a large group of people working for the University.

I have great respect and admiration for the University of Minnesota, being an alumni and a Senator representing many students and employees of the University. I think the administration’s efforts to make the University a premier institution are laudable. However, I want to strongly voice my concern and extreme disappointment that you have not been able to negotiate a better contract for your workers.

The University’s clerical, health and child care workers are key to your goal of becoming a top rated school. It was the intention of the Legislature that funding provided to the University of Minnesota be used in a way that supports the workers whose children, youth, and families depend on a living wage that keeps up with inflation and indicates the valuable service they provide to the institution. I intend to question the Legislature's efforts to fund the University if this issue is not taken care of promptly. I respectfully request that you send your negotiation team back in with a reasonable offer that will bring resolution and allow the University to continue its great work with integrity and fairness to all employees.

Thank you for your strong statement of support. It means a lot to us when every day without pay makes this feel more and more like a war, not a negotiation process.

We, too, feel that we add the unquantifiable to the unversity community--institutional memory, creative problem solving, intellectual heft.

It is discouraging and disillusioning that the university's administration so undervalue our achievements and feel so threatened by the presence of unified and deserved disgust.

The university has now lost far more money than it would take agree to the modest (3.25 and 3.5 percent) request for an across the board increase.
