The Faculty Strike Support Committee is sponsoring a silent protest in solidarity with the striking AFSCME workers. We will be silent for one half hour, followed by a minute of “noise,” because we are struck speechless by the administration’s refusal to offer the workers a fair, living-wage contract and because of the continuing attacks on academic freedom and free speech that they are waging against supporters of the strike. Please join us.

If you do plan to participate, here are some things to consider:
* Come dressed as you are but consider wearing something green to identify the action with AFSCME (we are trying to get a pile of green armbands, but that may not happen so perhaps you have time to make one from a fabric scrap);

* Bring a strike support poster (the green one) and/or wear a button – we will have 50 buttons if you need one, but the union is pretty much out of posters for now;

* Bring a “prop” to make this piece of political theatre more theatrical. For instance, an appropriate mask/face on a stick, or a “noise reducer,” or a “decibel checker” (in case we need to check our noise level -- thanks to Deborah Rosenstein of Labor Education Service for this suggestion);

* We will have tape (hopefully blue painter’s tape) and we urge everyone to consider taping her/his mouth as part of the symbolism;

* Bring a noisemaker or come prepared with a slogan (or both) for the final “minute of noise” – we think a cacophony is appropriate, so we’d like lots of different slogans and sounds.
